HbA1C test measures the average amount of sugar/glucose that has been in the patient's blood over the last 3 months and is the best test to determine if a person's blood sugar is under control.

Because glucose tests only measure the current level of sugar in the blood, the American Diabetes Association has recommended that an HbA1C test be performed every 3 months.  Studies show that immediate feedback on HbA1C levels improves glycemic control in type 1 and insulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients.
