Designed as a treatment for Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD), the EROS CTD is a small, hand-held, battery operated device that creates a gentle vacuum over the clitoris to increase blood flow to the genitalia and cause clitoral engorgement. This leads to increased vaginal lubrication and enhancement of the ability to reach orgasm. The product received FDA clearance on April 28, 2000 and is available by prescription only at Grogan's Healthcare Supply.

What is Female Sexual Dysfunction?
FSD is a legitimate disease recognized by the National Institute of Health. It includes the disorders related to sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain, resulting in personal distress. FSD is characterized by one or more of the following symptoms: reduced or no clitoral sensation, reduced or no lubrication, difficulty or inability to experience an orgasm, and a lack of interest in the physical sexual act, despite a positive past sexual relationship.

Female sexual dysfunction can have physical and/or psychological causes. Over the past decade or so, research on men has shown the causes for male sexual dysfunction to be 90% medical and only 10% psychological. Now that research is being done with women, some physicians anticipate that studies will show the same results for women. Physical causes include (1) inadequate blood flow to the genitalia, which results in reduced clitoral sensitivity or numbness, a lack of lubrication, and difficulty or inability to have or sustain an orgasm; (2) side effects of many medications including (but not limited to) anti-depressants and some blood-pressure medications, causing a decreased libido (desire); (3) trauma to the pelvic area. Psychological causes include low self-esteem or body image and earlier physical or psychological abuse.

More than 43% of American women (about 40 million) experience some form of sexual disorder. Any woman can experience FSD at some point in her life, but the majority of women are postmenopausal due to hormonal changes.  However, pre-menopausal women can have it as well. Women with diabetes, spinal cord injuries, an increased incidence of fibroid tumors in the vaginal area, or cardiovascular problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or pre-existing heart disease may be more susceptible. Also, women who take some anti-depressants, blood pressure medications such as beta-blockers and other prescription medications may have side effects that potentially cause FSD.

How does EROS-CTD work?
Designed for at-home patient use with a prescription from a licensed physician, the devices creates a gentle suction over the female clitoris to increase blood flow to the genitalia and causes clitoral engorgement for treatment of FSD.  When blood flow from the arteries to the clitoris increases, a chain reaction begins: (1) the arteries within the clitoris become engorged with blood; (2) the arteries expand to accommodate the additional blood and as a result start to put pressure on the nerves, which causes sensation in the clitoris?sexual stimulation; (3) this clitoral sensation results in increased blood flow to the vagina and causes vaginal lubrication to make intercourse easier.
